Ankara İkinci Vakıf Hanı

Ankara İkinci Vakıf Hanı (today known as Theater Building) is one of the most important buildings designed by Mimar Kemaleddin (About the architect)  in the years he was working as chief designer of Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü. It was designed between 1926-1927 and built until 1930. It is a seven floored, concrete building which is in fact designed as a dwellings complex, but then transformed into a government building with some modifications, for the use of various instutions.

Building has a axial composition which is symmetrical according to the vertical axis passing through the middle, dividing the building into two equal parts. General form of building is a circle segment which is very close to rectange. There are enterances from all streets. In the middle of the building there is an air void which is being used as a hall today, from Turkish State Theaters. Facade corners of the upper floors have a rounded shape, in correspondence with the circular shaped balconies. With the vaults of ground floor facade, these curvilinear forms add a soft movement sense to general form of building. Although outside walls are covered with stucco, they seem as stone walls thanks to the strong horizontal lines placed on them. The most significant decoration of outside view is the extremely ornamental iron balcony fences. Inside, the theater hall and the dome over it have really gorgeous ornament figures.
