Mimar Kemaleddin


Mimar Kemaleddin is one of the most well respected architects of Turkish history. He started his primary education in 1875, Istanbul which is the city he was born in. Then he moved to Crete with his family in 1881, he started his secondary education there and graduated after turning back to Istanbul. Meanwhile, since he had a talent and interest in engineering he became a student of today's Istanbul Technical University; “Hendese-i Mülkiye Mektebi” where he graduated from with the most succesfull degree. Afterwards he started his academic career, working as assistant of August Jachmund along four years. It was also the same time when he started designing his first projects in the personal office he opened in Istanbul. In 1895, with the support of Jachmund and government scholarship he went to study in Berlin, Charlottenburg Teknische Hochschule, his purpose was to develop an expertation especially in architecture. He returned to Istanbul in 1900 and continued working as instructor, replacing the position of Jachmund. He was the founder of first Turkish chambers of engineering and architecture; “Osmanlı Mimar ve Mühendis Cemiyeti” (founded in 1908). After designing Filibe railway station succesfully for Eastern Railways Cooperation, he was assigned to design three more, in Selanik, Edirne and Sofia. He was interested and worked in restorations of historical buildings including Mescid-i Aksa. He made studies about Ottoman architecture principles, then he shaped his own style of architecture and he defined a new national architecture ideal for young Turkish republic. He is the designer of many turbe and mosques in latest period of Ottomans, and also some important first republic buildings of new capital city Ankara, where he died in (1927).
